Choose between Ideal and Worcester Bosch by comparing the exact boilers and installation packages, rather than the badge alone. Both offer models for different homes and budgets. The better choice is the one that meets your heating and hot-water needs, fits the available space and comes with clear installation and warranty terms.

A useful shortlist is the Ideal Logic Max Combi2 and Worcester Bosch Greenstar 4000. Ideal vs Worcester Bosch: the practical verdict

• For a shallow cupboard: the Logic Max Combi2's published casing is shallower than the Greenstar 4000's. The installer must still allow the required service clearances and space for pipework and flue connections.

• For hot-water performance: the two 30kW examples have very similar published flow rates at the same temperature rise. Mains supply and simultaneous use can matter more than the small difference on the specification sheet.

• For value: compare the complete installed price, included controls, filter and confirmed cover. A cheaper boiler-only price is not proof of a cheaper installation.

• For peace of mind: get the warranty or guarantee length and its conditions in writing. Brand reputation does not replace correct installation, commissioning and maintenance.

Compare equivalent models, not whole brands

Ideal Logic Max Combi2 30: Ideal's technical data lists domestic hot-water output of 30.3kW, a flow rate of 12.4 litres per minute at a 35°C temperature rise, and casing dimensions of 700 × 395 × 278mm (height × width × depth). The published central-heating output differs from the domestic hot-water output: “30” is not a reason to assume your home needs 30kW of space heating.

Worcester Bosch Greenstar 4000 30kW: Worcester lists up to 12.3 litres per minute at a 35°C rise. Published dimensions are 710 × 400 × 310mm. The Greenstar 4000 product information and specifier guide give the model details and installation clearances.

On these published figures, the Ideal casing is 32mm shallower and the nominal flow-rate difference is only 0.1 litre per minute. Those are specific comparisons between these models, not a verdict that one manufacturer is always smaller or more powerful.

What do hot-water flow rates mean for your home?

A flow rate quoted at a 35°C rise describes water heated by 35 degrees above its incoming temperature. It is not a promise that every tap will deliver that rate in every season. Colder incoming water, a higher required outlet temperature and a limited mains supply affect the available result.

Tell the installer whether you commonly run two showers together, fill a bath while using the kitchen tap, or need hot water in several places. Ask them to measure the supply and recommend the boiler type and output for that pattern of use.

Warranty and guarantee: check the actual package

Ideal's Logic Max Combi2 specification sheet advertises a 10-year parts-and-labour warranty, subject to terms, with registration within 30 days of installation. The package includes an Ideal System Filter.

Worcester's published guarantee information lists the Greenstar 4000 with seven years as standard, eight with a qualifying Greenstar System Filter and an extended ten-year option under the stated installation conditions. Confirm which package your quote includes rather than assuming every installation has maximum cover.

• Who registers the boiler and provides the confirmation?

• Which filter, controls and installation conditions apply?

• What servicing is required to maintain cover, and what will it cost?

• Are labour, call-outs and the relevant parts included, and what exclusions apply?

Keep your commissioning paperwork, registration and service records. A long headline warranty is only useful when you understand and meet its conditions.

Which costs less to install?

Ask for prices for the same property and scope of work. Brand-wide starting prices can compare different outputs, controls or installation assumptions, so they are a poor basis for deciding which quote offers better value.

Your comparison should include the boiler model, flue arrangement, any gas-pipe changes, condensate route, controls, system filter, cleaning treatment, removal of the old appliance, commissioning and applicable taxes. Moving the boiler or converting the system can change the job substantially.

For a simple example, if one complete quote is £300 higher, ask what that £300 buys: additional work, different controls, a different model or longer confirmed cover. This is a comparison method, not an iHeat price or a claim that one brand always costs £300 more.

Compare the exact model's published efficiency measure and compatible controls. Figures calculated using different standards or operating conditions should not be treated as interchangeable. Ask how the proposed controls will operate the boiler and whether your existing thermostat is suitable.

Heat-exchanger material alone does not establish how long a boiler will last. Ideal's installation instructions should be checked for the specified model and maintenance requirements. Ask about system-water treatment, filter maintenance and servicing rather than choosing on a blanket claim that one material guarantees a longer life.

Are Ideal boilers as reliable as Worcester Bosch?

A fair reliability comparison needs comparable models, ages, installation conditions and a clear evidence source. Awards from different years, owner-review scores and an installer's experience each describe different things. None alone proves that every boiler from one brand will outlast the other.

Ask an installer to explain their recommendation for your home: model suitability, access for future servicing, manufacturer support and the complete package. A recommendation is more useful when the reasons can be checked.

Shortlist suitable models, compare the written installation scopes, confirm the warranty and make sure the hot-water performance matches how your household uses it. If the packages are genuinely comparable, price and the controls you prefer can be sensible deciding factors.
